5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Windows

Replacing windows is a homeowner’s task that often gets put off too long. Part of the reason that many homeowners put this home improvement project off is that they don’t really know what the warning signs are that their windows need to be replaced. Here’s a look at five common signs that indicate window replacement is a good idea.

1. You Can Feel Drafts

Modern windows shouldn’t be drafty. If the drafts are minor, there are steps you can take to help reduce the impact of window drafts, but usually, those fixes only last for a short period of time. In the end, you’ll need to replace your windows at some point.

2. You’ve had Visible Condensation on Your Windows for a while

Condensation on the inside of your windows is often an indicator that the humidity in your home is too high.  While you may be able to address these concerns by turning down the humidifier, you’ll want to do something soon. Excessive condensation and moisture can cause mold or make your window frame rot over time.

3. They’re Difficult to Open and Close

Windows shouldn’t be hard to open and close. If your windows don’t open or close easily, it’s likely that something is actually wrong with the mechanisms that allow them to do so. Particularly with Casement Windows, you may have wood rot in the sash or frame of the window, preventing the window from operating. Older windows often have this issue. While some windows can be repaired, most of the time it’s smartest to simply replace them.

4. They’re Hard to Clean

Older windows can be a real pain in the backside to clean. If you have a hard time cleaning your windows, it may be time to think about updating your windows to something more modern. New windows are designed in a way that makes cleaning them simple. Some of our Andersen windows actually have a metallic coating on the exterior, which prevents water spots and dust from adhering to the window, which keeps them looking clean longer.

5. Small amount of rot was noticed, maybe the tip of the iceberg

Have you ever noticed a small amount of rot on the inside or exterior of a window, and thought you could just throw a little putty on it?  While sometimes a small amount of rot can be repaired, in many cases by the time the rot is visible, it is a much larger problem, sometimes with water getting into the interior of your home’s walls. Visible rot is one of the biggest reasons to have a window totally replaced, versus trying to throw a repair bandaid on it. Do any of the above signs sound familiar to you?
