Do Double Pane Windows Need Storm Windows?

The short answer is no. Quality double pane windows will provide all the comfort and security you need. Your windows can be a significant source of heat loss, which means the more you can eliminate drafts and loss of heat through your windows, the more money you’ll save. In the past, one method for addressing heat loss through windows was adding storm windows. That became unnecessary once double pane windows became the norm.

What are Double Pane Windows

Double pane windows are windows that have two layers of glass with either air or some type of gas housed between them. This layer of air or gas acts as an insulator and helps to keep the hot air inside your home during the cold winter months. Double pane windows are among the most energy efficient option for homes. The energy efficiency varies depending on the construction and quality of the windows. Going from a single pane window to a double pane window can definitely save money on your energy bill.

What Are Storm Windows

Storm windows are an additional window added to either the outside or inside of your window that is designed to help eliminate drafts and provide another layer of protection for your home. Storm windows are a common addition to homes that have older, single pane windows. Adding storm windows is often cheaper than outright window replacement, but they’re not as efficient as double pane windows and often need to be removed or have to be moved aside if you want to open the window.

Why You Don’t Need Both

Adding storm windows to double pane windows won’t help further insulate your home much. The payoff of adding storm windows to a home that already has double pane windows would be a very long time. It’s just not necessary. Your money would be much better spent upgrading the double pane glass in your current windows. Modern double pane glass is more efficient than ever before. Double pane window glass technology continues to improve. Those double pane windows you installed 10 to 15 years ago aren’t nearly as efficient as they could be with modern energy efficient double pane glass in them. If you’ve considered storm windows to reduce heat loss in your home, consider upgrading the glass in your current double-pane windows instead. Need help determining what to do about your windows?
