FAQs About Buying New Windows

Most homeowners only have to buy new windows a few times in their lives. Because of this, they’re not experts in the area. If you know you need new windows and feel a little left in the dark, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about buying new windows

Can They be Repaired or Replaced?

Repairing your current windows is sometimes possible but depends on the condition of the window and the extent of the repairs. If you think you need your windows repaired, weigh the cost of the repairs against the cost of replacement windows. Remember that new windows will require far less maintenance, come with new window technology and be more efficient.

How Much Does It Cost?

It’s often hard to give a general estimate for the cost of new windows due to the fact that price can vary dramatically from product to product. Different products have different features and technology. Window size also plays a role, and the installation level of difficulty must be factored in, too. For example, second and third-floor windows are more difficult to install.

Can I Do Just One Window or Do I Have to Do Them All?

Yes, you can definitely replace just one window. However, it’s really a matter of preference, budget, and the window’s location. It’s often more cost effective to do one big project than it is to do multiple small ones. Also, if you replace only one window, that new window may look different than your home’s other windows. If you feel you want to do one or only a couple of windows at a time, consider doing your home in phases. Do one side and then the other or one floor and then the other.

What’s the Difference Between Various Brands?

Different brands offer different quality products, different warranties, different window designs and glass and different frame materials and sizes. Another factor that sets brands apart is the installation method. Some brands offer insert or pocket windows while others provide full-frame replacement windows. In general, focus on brands with a strong history and good brand recognition, and excellent local Dealer representation.

What’s the Process Like?

The process starts by assessing your needs and getting all the details and measurements. Then there’s a lead time of 6 to 10 weeks between the time you place your order to the time installation begins. The actual installation process varies depending on the number of windows and your individual home. The walls and at least six feet in front of the window will need to be clear during the installation process. The installer will dispose of the old windows and painting may need to be done depending on the project. Have a question that’s not here?
